AN EDUCATOR DEDICATED TO EQUITABLE & EXCELLENT SCHOOLS.
My love affair with math began during preschool when I realized my birthday was a sum (March 12th or 3=1+2). After this realization, I was fascinated with numbers, patterns, and logic. After attending high school in a small town in New Jersey & graduating 3rd in my class, I was admitted into the Honors Program in college. I majored in Statistics & Mathematics and discovered that I was indeed, unprepared for college. Nevertheless, I earned my bachelor’s degree and this struggle propelled me into doing my part to close the provision gap – often referred to as the opportunity/achievement gap.
I joined Teach For America & earned a master’s degree in secondary math education. I've spent my career in Newark, NJ (2 years w/ Newark Public Schools + 11 years w/ KIPP). In the time I've been at KIPP, I got married (James), had two kids (James Aedan, 8 and Journey, 4), took on four different roles at NCA (teacher, 7 years; Dept. Chair, 4 years; cheerleading coach, 5 years; Assistant Principal, 2 years; Principal-In-Residence, 1.5 years) and am currently serving in my 6th role, as School Leader.
I have the privilege of impacting students, teachers and leaders across the country by serving as a National Math Standards & Equity Consultant with UnboundEd, Schoolkit and other programs. I formerly served as an Adjunct Professor for 5 years at Relay GSE, where I taught first-year math content for secondary schools.
While striving to make schools both more excellent & equitable, I earned a spot in the Miles Family Fellowship with the KIPP Foundation. Our leadership development programming involves digging into strategies to dismantle the status quo and better serve students who have been historically marginalized.
I am a proud graduate of Rutgers University: New Brunswick (Scarlet Knights!), a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, the founder of MATHerapy™ & Designed For This, an avid day-dreamer and sometimes doer of scrap-booking, a persistent picture taker (not a photographer), and consistently on the look-out for someone to battle my keen knowledge of 90s sitcom theme songs.
The use of numbers in this bio is intentional.
